An important example is provided by the use of eye movements to survey a visual scene and to extract detailed information only at selected foveated locations. In this talk, background on gaze control and its relationships to attention mechanisms  will be reviewed. It will be discussed how these ideas can be developed in computational models. Also, it will be shown how the animate approach may be usefully applied within realms different from robot vision, e.g., video and image database indexing, image and video compression.
