CS Colloquium on December 11, 2003 at 2pm Title: Finding Structure in Pedestrian Flow Speaker: Dr. Christopher R. Wren Mitsubishi Electronic Research Laboratories Cambridge, MA http://www.merl.com/people/wren/ Date: December 11, 2003 (Thursday) Time: 2pm Place: MCS 135, 111 Cummington Street Abstract: The occupants of a building generate patterns as they move from place to place, stand at a corner talking, or loiter by the coffee machine. These patterns leave their mark on every object in a building. Even the lowly carpet will eventually be able to tell you quite a lot about these patterns by how it wears. A network of cheap sensors should be able to perceive these patterns and provide that context to relevant building systems, however, these sensor systems will only be practical if they are cheap to manufacture, install and operate. This talk will detail our experiences with ultra-cheap, building-scale perceptual systems. Specifically we will present results on auto-calibration, event recognition and event predication from motion detector data.
