COLLOQUIUM Computer Science Department, Boston University Speaker: Kit Colbert Mware, An EMC Company Date: Wednesday, October 5 Time: 11:00 Place: Room MCS 135, 111 Cummington Street (for directions, see www.cs.bu.edu/colloquium) Title: VMotion: Fast Transparent Migration for Virtual Machines Abstract: This talk describes the design and implementation of a system that uses virtual machine technology to provide fast, transparent application migration. This is the first system that can migrate unmodified applications on unmodified mainstream Intel x86-based operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Linux, Novell NetWare and others. Neither the application nor any clients communicating with the application can tell that the application has been migrated. Experimental measurements show that for a variety of workloads, application downtime caused by migration is less than a second. Biography: Kit Colbert is a member of the technical staff in the ESX engineering team in our Palo Alto office. Kit joined VMware from the Computer Science department at Brown University in 2003 and plays a significant role in the on-going development of VMware's ESX product line. VMware, an independent software subsidiary of EMC, was founded in 1998 to bring mainframe-class virtual machine technology to industry-standard computers. Host: Azer Bestavros
