Ensuring that the users benefit from the high speed of the networks involves several other related disciplines. These will be reviewed. A simple rule of thumb that helps decide numerous issues in the design of high speed networks will be presented. A common misunderstanding about future traffic pattern will be discussed. Limited electronic bandwidth has lead researchers to investigate all-optical networking. Current research in this area will be highlighted. Biography Raj Jain is a Senior Consulting Engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation where he has been involved in performance modeling and analysis of a number of computer systems and networks including VAX clusters, DECnet, Ethernet, and FDDI. He received a Ph. D. degree from Harvard University in 1978 and has taught graduate courses in performance analysis at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the Vice-Chair of ACM SIGCOMM and serves on the editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Networking, Computer Networks and ISDN Systems, Computer Communications (UK), and the Journal of High Speed Networks. He received "The Best How-To Book - Systems" Computer Press Award for his 1991 book "The Art of Computer Systems Performance Analysis" published by Wiley, New York. He has authored numerous papers on networking performance, is an ACM Lecturer and an IEEE Distinguished Visitor. His next book entitled ``FDDI Handbook: High Speed Networking using Fiber and Other Media'' is being published this year by Addison-Wesley, Reading, Mass. Dr. Jain is a Fellow of IEEE.
