Subject: - Apropos

The idea of the IEEE-RTTC repository developed at the conclusion of the
12th Real-Time Systems Symposium held in San Antonio, Texas, in December
1991, as a convenient way of exchanging information among members of the
IEEE Technical Committee on Real-Time Computing, who are accessible via
the Internet.

This document overviews the services offered by the IEEE-RTTC repository
at Boston University: how to automatically subscribe to and unsubscribe
from the IEEE-RTTC mailing list (using Internet mail), and how to obtain
information/papers from the repository's archive (using anonymous FTP).
The IEEE-RTTC mailing list will be used to send a frequent electronic
digest (newsletter) that would include, in addition to announcements and
technical discussions pertinent to the community, abstracts of papers
and/or technical reports that could be obtained via anonymous ftp from
the IEEE-RTTC repository's archive.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Subject: - Mailing List Subscription

Requests to subscribe to or unsubscribe from the IEEE-RTTC mailing list
are processed daily by the repository automatic server. To add one or
more members to the IEEE-RTTC mailing list, send to the maintainer (a
list of addresses is supplied at the end of this document) a message
with the following "Subject:" line.

             +-------------------------------+
Subject: IEEE-RTTC[subscribe]
             +-------------------------------+

The Body of the message should include one line per new member. The
format of that line should be

             +-----------------------------------+
>>> (LastName, FirstName) e-mail
             +-----------------------------------+

Any other lines not on the above format (that is starting with ">>>" and
then a space ... etc.) are ignored. For example to add a new member, say
"Kathy Leonard" whose e-mail address is "leonard@dept.school.edu", then
send a message like the following

             +-----------------------------------------------+
To: bestavros@cs.bu.edu
From: (don't care)
Subject: IEEE-RTTC[subscribe]
--text follows this line--

...
>>> (Leonard, Kathy) leonard@dept.school.edu
...

             +-----------------------------------------------+

To remove one or more entries from the IEEE-RTTC mailing list, send to
the maintainer (a list of addresses is supplied at the end of this
document) a message with the following "Subject:" line

             +---------------------------------+
Subject: IEEE-RTTC[unsubscribe]
             +---------------------------------+

The body of t he message should include one line per unsubscribing
member. The format of that line should be

             +---------------------------+
>>> (LastName, FirstName)
             +---------------------------+

Any other lines not on the above format (that is not starting with ">>>"
and then a space ... etc.) are ignored. For example to unsubscribe the
member "Paul Murphy" then send a message like the following:

             +--------------------------------------------+
To: bestavros@cs.bu.edu
From: (don't care)
Subject: IEEE-RTTC[unsubscribe]
--text follows this line--

...
>>> (Murphy, Paul)
...

             +--------------------------------------------+

Subject: - The IEEE-RTTC Digest

The IEEE-RTTC electronic Digest is compiled and mailed bi-weekly -- the
frequency can be changed if need be -- to all members of the IEEE-RTTC
mailing list. The messages included in the Digest are those received by
the IEEE-RTTC server during the week preceeding the Digest's issuance.
Messages to be posted on the IEEE-RTTC Digest should be e-mailed to the
following address:

  IEEE-RTTC@cs.bu.edu

Please notice that the above address is different from the IEEE-RTTC
maintainer's address. Messages sent to the maintainer for inclusion in
the Digest might not be processed in time.

Each issue of the digest starts with a convenient table of contents that
lists, for each message in the issue, the identity of the sender and the
subject(s) discussed therein. If you are sending a message that includes
a number of subjects and you want these subjects to appear in the table
of contents, then do the following:

at the point in your message where you want to switch to a new subject,
insert a Subject: line. The subject line should start with the keyword
"Subject:" (No leading spaces and only the "S" should be capitalized).
The remainder of the line will be considered to be the title of the
subject you are switching to. Please make use of that facility if you
intend to post more than one message on a given issue.

The main subject of your message (the one that you pass on to your mail
program) will be considered to be the subject of the first topic (or the
only topic) you are addressing. Messages with unspecified main subject
will appear in the table of contents with a subject line that reads
"Unspecified subject". For the convenience of the digest readers you are
highly encouraged to include meaningful subjects in all your messages.
If you include a message inside your own message (e.g. a forwarded
message), the autodigestifier will not consider the included message as
a new message. Thus, the subject of that message will appear in the
table of contents under your name.

Due to restrictions on the maximum length of messages that some mailers
impose, it is advisable not to post very long articles on the Digest.
Long articles, postscript files, ... etc. are better exchanged using the
repository anonymous FTP service described below.

To reply to an article, please address your reply to the appropriate
destination. If you want your reply to be public, then send it as a
regular posting to the Digest.

Failure to receive the digest for an extended period of time is a sign
that "something is wrong with your subscription". Entries in the mailing
list, which are consistently erroneous, are removed by the maintainer
without any further notice. If you fail to receive the digest for few
consecutive weeks (especially if you post something on it, or if you
know that somebody else got it), then this is a sign that there might be
a problem with your e-mail address. You should contact the maintainer,
if this is the case.

Subject: - IEEE-RTTC Archive

The IEEE-RTTC Archive allows access and exchange of information among
members of the IEEE-RTTC community using anonymous FTP. To access or add
to the contents of the Archive, please follow the following instructions

     (1) Use FTP to get to "cs.bu.edu".. For Unix users, just type:

                     ftp cs.bu.edu

     (2) You will be prompted for a login name. Just type:

                     anonymous

     (3) You will be prompted for a password. Just type:

                     guest (or your ID)

     (4) At the FTP prompt, type:

                     cd IEEE-RTTC

     (5) At the FTP prompt, type:

                     binary

This will allow you to access binary as well as regular files.

     (6) At this point you are accessing the subdirectory that contains
the IEEE-RTTC Archive. To know what's in there, just type:

                     ls -l

you should find at least the following files:

                     README -- This document
CONTENTS -- The contents of the IEEE-RTTC Archive
            Digest.MM-DD-YY -- The IEEE-RTTC digest for MM/DD/YY

     (7) To get a copy of any of these files on your machine, just type:

                    get <filename>

for instance, to get this document just type "get README".

     (8) To make a file from your account available through the archive,
         just type:

                    put <filename>

for instance, to put a paper called "paper.tex" in the archive,
just type "put paper.tex". If you add anything to the archive you
are expected to report it to the maintainer so that appropriate
description would be available in the README file. Failure to do
so, will result in the deletion of your file(s) from the Archive.
Also, in an effort to standardize file extensions, please follow
         the following convention:

                    <filename>.txt Plain text
                    <filename>.tex LaTex source
                    <filename>.ps Postscript
                    <filename>.dvi DVI format

     (9) To exit from FTP, type:

                    quit

Please refer to the FTP manual page for more details on using Unix File
Transfer Protocol.

The IEEE-RTTC Archive is intended to contain different files and information
that would be beneficial to the Real-Time community. In particular, copies
of papers and/or technical reports can be exchanged using this service. For
an up-to-date directory of the different files in the Archive and the
contents of these files, refer to the file named "CONTENTS". The content of
the IEEE-RTTC Archive will be periodically updated to reflect new/modified
information. At the end of the "CONTENTS" file, a time-stamp indicates when
the current version of the Archive was produced.
