The workshop has several goals: - to investigate advances in real-time operating systems, software, and programming environments; - to promote interaction among real-time computing researchers and practitioners; - to evaluate the maturity and directions of real-time system technology. Workshop attendees will explore the best current ideas on real-time software and operating systems. Position papers describing new ideas, promising approaches, and work in progress are considered particularly appropriate. Topics of the workshop include: - Real-time operating systems and communication. - Real-time programming, requirements, analysis, and specification. - Real-time software systems. - Real-time scheduling and resource management. - Examples of current real-time systems with challenging time constraints. Prospective attendees should send 8 copies of a 3-5 page position paper to the Program Chair by February 1, 1993. The position paper should focus on insights and lessons gained from recent research and practical experience in real-time operating systems and software. Complete details regarding the workshop will be sent to all participants along with acceptance letters by March 20, 1993. A digest of accepted position papers will be made available at the conference. Stoyenko) Subject: CFP: 1st IEEE RT Applications Workshop Dear colleagues, I would like to encourage you strongly to make a submission to the First IEEE Workshop on Real-Time Applications, to take place in New York City on May 12, 1993. The Workshop is the first of its kind and is taking place in conjunction with the annual IEEE Workshop on Real-Time Systems and Software. The Workshop will serve as a forum for industrial, government and academic researchers, practitioners and engineers who have been addressing practical applications in any real-time application domain: astronomy, physical, military, complex systems, energy, transportation, environmental, petro-chemical, pharmaceutical, process control, telecommunications, manufacturing, multi-media... to name just a few! An older CFP (in PostScript) is available using anonymous FTP from the IEEE-RTTC repository at: cs.bu.edu (/IEEE-RTTC/ directory). The deadline has been extended to February 1st, 1993. Cases where proprietary and security issues need to be addressed before an official submission may be allowed will be accommodated. We are interested in receiving 1-5 page position papers that would clearly specify the problem with respect to its application environment, requirements and external process characteristics, possibly present the solutions to the problem, and discuss unsolved problems. The Workshop is supported by Honeywell, IEEE TC on Real-Time Systems, Office of Naval Research, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Real-Time Computing Laboratory at NJIT and the Institute for Systems Integration at NJIT. This is a senior-level position intended for a person with a strong record of research and with a commitment to excellence in scholarship and teaching. We currently have considerable strength in theoretical computer science and are looking for a dynamic computer scientist to lead the department in developing new areas of expertise in applied computer science. The Computer Science Department in the College of Liberal Arts offers B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. programs and has a dis- tinguished research faculty. Current faculty research interests include distributed computing, real-time systems, theory of computation, randomness in computing, fault tolerant computing, natural language processing, programming language theory and automated deduction. There are 130 undergraduate computer science majors and 70 graduate stu- dents. The department has excellent computing facilities and close connections to many other allied programs within the university. Besides being a wonderful place to live, Boston offers the very best opportunities to pursue research and teaching in close proximity to other leading research institutions. If you are interested in joining our department, please send a current vita and the names and addresses of four people from whom we can request references to: Professor Steven Homer Search Committee Chair Department of Computer Science 111 Cummington Street Boston University Boston, MA 02215 Boston University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
