_________________________________________________________________________ American Arab Scientific Society ------ The American Arab Scientific Society is a non-profit, non-political and non-religious organization dedicated to spreading the benefits of science and technology to people of Arab origin, in the US and throughout the world. The society has set up four chapters in four states: New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and California. Up to now, the activities of the society have chiefly been: o Collection and distribution of academic and technical literature to institutions of the Arab World upon request; o Organization of lectures and seminars on scientific and technical issues relevant to the Arab World; o Promotion of contacts among institutions and individuals in Arab countries and their counterparts in the US; o Collection of funds for the assistance of scientific and educational institutions in the Arab World; o Organization of social events in which members and friends can get to know each other better. These allow non-members to become familiar with the goals and activities of the society; o Publication of a quarterly newsletter which contains short articles on topics related to the goals and activities of the society as well as announcements. o Establishment of an electronic repository of software and information at Boston University, accessible through the Internet. All work is done on a voluntary basis and mostly at member's expense, therefore the more members the larger the tasks that can be carried out. With this in mind, the society would like to diversify and expand its activities to attract business people and social scientists as well as teachers and artists in addition to the core members with scientific and engineering backgrounds. The society especially welcomes retired and semi-retired individuals whose experience and free time could be an invaluable resource. People with part-time work or those who are not working and can donate their time and effort are also welcome. In order to make more of a mark the society will have to increase the level of the activities enumerated above and include new activities. Some of the new activities we would like to include are: - Sponsorship of student essay contests on the applications of science and technology to the Arab World; - Dissemination of information to a more general audience on the nature of scientific and technological progress, discovery, invention and innovation. This touches on social issues: commerce, investment and other economic issues, as well as on psychological issues and matters of rationality; - Promotion of technical exchanges among Americans of Arab origin. Although these activities call for only a modest increase in the financial requirements of the society, the infrastructure which will develop to support them will in the long run be substantial. So far the only routine expenses are the mailbox and the Newsletter; ultimately we will need a telephone, office space and further down the road, a library-research facility. If you would like to be part of this enterprise, please write us a letter explaining how you think you can help and send it to: American Arab Scientific Society P.O.
